The Open Book Style in More Detail
The Open Book's performing style varies, as appropriate for the particular show being presented. TOB often combines recognized readers theatre methods (sometimes called "theatre of the mind") with minimalist staging concepts variously expressed by Antonin Artaud, Bertolt Brecht, Jerzy Grotowski, Keith Johnstone and Bernard Shaw. The ensemble also put up more elaborate productions which add a visual and technical landscape.
Dynamic rhythmic and phrasing techniques more commonly found in chamber music are what our founder Marvin Kaye calls "The Open Book Effect.”
In any size venue, The Open Book's intimate, inclusive "living room" style, with book in hand, consciously invokes the mythic power of language, with all its sonorities and connotations, to stimulate the imagination of the audience.
